The CW have finally spoken, handing a reduced episode season four renewal to Superman & Lois.
This season the show has been dealing with the twin threats of a cancer diagnosis for Lois and Bruno Mannheim the head of Intergang.
The CW’s Entertainment President Brad Schwartz notes that superhero/family drama is their strongest show but also their most expensive. In order for the show to be renewed some changes have to be made. Already we have noted that there will be a reduced episode count to 10. The budget will also be reduced meaning more focus on family drama than superheroics.
The storytelling sets this show apart from the other superhero shows the CW aired. Also the fact that it started with no real connection to the Arrowverse other than Tyler Hoechlin and Elisabeth Tulloch. Still it would be fair to say that it was its budget that allowed it to easily be distinguishable from the Arrowverse shows. It will be interesting to see what effect the reduction in special effects and the likely expansion of the focus on the family drama aspect will affect the shows popularity.
Cast Cull
The major change announced since the renewal news has been clarification on the main cast for season one. Seven of the current main cast have departed. The exiting cast include Dylan Walsh, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Erik Valdez, Inde Navarrette, Wolé Parks, Tayler Buck and Sofia Hasmik. They may appear next season but as a recurring or guest star. It seems that season four will look very different to the current show.
Returning next season will be Tyler Hoechlin, Elizabeth Tulloch, Michael Bishop and Alex Garfin along with Michael Cudlitz. Cudlitz is set to guest star in the remainder of season three as Lex Luthor.
The Superman & Lois season 3 finale drops on Tuesday 27 June on The CW.
