Rian Johnson’s much anticipated sequel to Knives Out, Glass Onion will premiere at TIFF.
The Toronto International Film Festival will return for its 47th edition from September 8-18 2022.
In Glass Onion, “Detective Benoit Blanc travels to Greece to peel back the layers of a mystery involving a new cast of colorful suspects.”
Daniel Craig is returns as Benoit, with the confirmed ensemble cast including Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Madelyn Cline, and Kate Hudson.
Johnson took to social media recently to talk about his inpirations:
“Something I love about Agatha Christie is how she never tread water creatively. I think there’s a misperception that her books use the same formula over and over, but fans know the opposite is true. It wasn’t just settings or murder methods, she was constantly stretching the genre conceptually. Under the umbrella of the whodunnit she wrote spy thrillers, proto-slasher horrors, serial killer hunts, gothic romances, psychological character studies, glam travelogues. When I made Knives Out, that’s what excited me about the prospect of making more mysteries with Daniel as Benoit Blanc – to emulate Christie and have every film be like a whole new book, with its own tone, ambition, reason for being… and (ta dah) title.”
Knives Out did extremely well for Lionsgate back in 2019. The film earned $300 million worldwide at the box office. However, it was Netflix who swept in to take the rights for the sequel(s). There will likely be more Benoit Blanc if Glass Onion proves anywhere near as wildly successful as the original.
Glass Onion will debut sometime this holiday season.
