Jared Keeso, creator of quirky Canadian comedy series Letterkenny has signed a major deal with Crave and New Metric Media.
Letterkenny will release its 12th and final season this month. Fans will also know that Keeso created and stars in spinoff Shoresy. The hockey based comedy earned a season three renewal recently. Both shows air on Hulu in the US.
The deal signed means that the parties will work together to create new shows. The deal however does not prevent Keeso from working with other parties. That approach is a rare one as Justin Stockman Crave’s VP Content Development & Programming acknowledges.
“This is probably the only deal that has ever been done like this in Canada. There is not a lot of pre-committing in Canadian content so this is pretty unique but shows our belief in Jared and the show, and in other shows that don’t exist yet. This is our way of ensuring he works with us as much as possible without us doing a Hollywood handcuff deal.”
Letterkenny is a multi-award winning show having launched 7 years ago. New Metric Media have reacquired the distribution rights for the show and licences it to Netflix in a number of European territories.
Bell Media which owns Crave will distribute new projects fro this deal. New Metric Media will serve as a sales agent. The deal includes Shoresy and will see around 18 episodes of that show plus others produced per year.
Bell Media’s Carlyn Klebuc, Dianne Vernon, and Justin Stockman; New Metric Media’s Mark Montefiore and Jayme Alter (Dentons LLC); and Jared Keeso’s representatives Trina Allen (Play Management), Gordon Gilbertson (Gilbertson Entertainment), and Jeffrey Hynick (Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer) negotiated the deals.
