It is time to look at Murder In A Small Town and its potentially difficult second album (episode), Fall From Grace.
The overarching event tying the episode together is a school reunion. We start with a weird bit of timeline work which is out of sequence. We find the body then go back to find out how we got here. It felt a little rough here so perhaps that is something that will get smoothed out before broadcast. Anyway this is a good opportunity for us the viewers to get to know more of the local central cast.
Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) and Isabella (Savonna Spracklin) get some time to shine. We also spend a little time with Andy (Fritzy-Klevans Destine) the young police officer we didn’t really get to meet in the pilot. In my review of the plot I pointed to some similarities with Hallmark mysteries. Now with a couple of episodes I feel like it exists about hallway between Scandi-Noir and cosy mystery.
Big Man On Campus
The murder this week was of a “peaked in high school guy” Bobby Ransome played by Greyston Holt (Bitten). The story shows us that our sheriff Karl is on the outside looking into this community. Also we see Cassandra coming out of that honeymoon feeling with questions. Does she want to be “the sheriff’s girlfriend” and can she handle potentially coming second to the job.
Though she does wrestle with that it doesn’t stop her helping out investigation wise. Though she doesn’t take it to an intrusive level, indeed it is the fact that she is local that helps move things along. We’re pointed in the direction of spurned husband Sam (Jarod Joseph) whose wife was having an affair with Bobby. Definitely a solid motive but we all know things are rarely that simple.
It’s Just A Crush
I liked getting to spend some time with Isabella and Andy the two central cast members we didn’t get much time with during the pilot. I recognise Savonna from Tribal and Departure two amazing Canadian productions you should check out if you haven’t already. Isabella just seems to have that instant likeability and was there some sparks at the end with Andy? We will have to see perhaps I just wanted to see that.
Fall From Grace feels like it directly connects to the pilot, it finishes introducing our main players so we can really feel apart of this little community cursed with a rather high murder rate.
