The Last of Us based on the multi-million copy selling video game franchise has begun filming in Calgary.
Workers are in the process of building a large set near Stampede Park. The Last of Us is part of a number of productions attracted to the area by the tax credits system.
Since January 2020 dozens of TV and film productions have begun or wrapped their shoots. This has led to a $955 million boost for the economy and 9000 jobs.
Premier Jason Kenney released the following statement:
“This is a true Alberta success story, a billion-dollar industry springing up around us right in front of our eyes.” he said.
“These productions are filling hotel rooms all over Alberta with workers who are patronizing restaurants and other services, they’re hiring carpenters and caterers, they’re creating jobs for lighting and tech crews, they’re driving both economic diversification and growth at a time when we desperately need it.”
The HBO show stars Pedro Pascal (Wonder Woman 1984), Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones) and Gabriel Luna (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman wrote the first season and serve as Executive Producers.
The Last of Us is expected to bring in more than $200 million to the province. It is also reckoned to be the largest TV production in Canadian history. The post-apocalyptic adaption joins Under the Banner of Heaven, the new Ghostbusters film and Wynonna Earp as recent productions to use Calgary’s landscape as a backdrop.
The show is expected to air some time in 2022.
