Murder in a Small Town is moving towards a strong finish with Family Concerns.
Noir-On-Sea
This sixth episode carries on the very serious somewhat dark tone that really started with Cassandra’s kidnapping. It feels like the show wants to appeal to fans of more serious murder mysteries. Not the comedy style ones or the cozy mystery style seen over on Hallmark. I am curious to see how much this resonates with viewers and in what numbers.
This week we start in the woods with an ode to slashers. A young woman stumbles out of the car and flees for her life while our mysterious killer takes his time choosing just the right knife. As she runs through the forest, our killer strolls like he is digesting a Sunday lunch but quickly catches up.
The next day Corporal Yen and Isabella work out together at a boxing gym. They meet Kat (Natalie Malaiker), her family own the gym but it seems that it will soon be sold to redevelop the land. Yen heads off to start work only to almost run over a local resident Callum (Gardiner Milar). Like every other episode of Law & Order SVU Callum discovered the body while walking his dog. Honestly, the show spends a noticeable amount of time showing us that finding a body would indeed really mess with you.
Holly (Dakota Guppy) and Devon (Alisha Newton) discuss the latter’s love life and possibly a creepy teacher when Cassandra (Kristin Kreuk) comes into the café. I was anticipating things being much more awkward than they were, Holly perhaps appreciating all that Cassandra has been through recently. We then see Cassandra’s friend Roger (Lucas Bryant) turn up, we know something is up with is mom but that’s it.
A Grizzly Scene
Chief Alberg (Rossif Sutherland) makes his way to the crime scene and we see what so disturbed the witness. The victim has been posed and the effect is unsettling, she looks like a life-sized doll. Alberg interviews Callum and it is heartbreaking.
The next day the gossip train is approaching light speed with the town buzzing with lots and lots of misinformation. While the team is discussing what can be done, there is a new report, another body has been found. Everyone is aware how his looks but it is important to note that this victim while also female and roughly the same age as the first is not posed in any way.
Connections
This episode has many connections, which pay off in the same episode. Our teacher, Karl said high school though I’m sure we established Holly got kicked out of college. Let me know in the comments. The potentially creepy teacher we learn about returns as Karl reaches out to him to do a better sketch so we can identify our first victim.
We learn the connection between our second victim and the boxing gym as she had an affair with the owner. In addition, her husband was responsible for selling the property. As we have learned throughout the series this may be every town Canada but there are no lack of secrets set to come out in the wash.
I feel like we have had some major hints around Cassandra’s friend Roger. He is currently in town to check on his mother who has had a serious stroke. We find out he hasn’t gone to see her, and judging by how rough he looks he has been drowning his sorrows. After Cassandra leaves him, he quickly locks in on a drunk woman stumbling home, which feels like a hint to the audience to suspect he might be our new serial killer.
What do you think Townies? Will this serial killer be someone we already know or a new resident? What do you think property prices are like right now in Gibson? Head to the comments and let us know what you think about Family Concerns.
