Netflix have grown from a small service for DVDs to an international powerhouse of entertainment filming all over the world, let’s check out their recent projects in Ontario.
TV and film nerds will know that Toronto is often used to substitute for New York locations. That is just the tip of the iceberg though so let’s take a closer look.
The Madness
Colman Domingo stars in this thriller series that sees a TV journalist caught up in a murder. The show premiered late last month on the streamer. Domingo is a Golden Globe and Academy Award winning actor, playwright and director.
Toronto was the location used for the show. Natives of the city might recognise Underpass Park, East York’s Ritz Restaurant and the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres to bring the story to life.
Hot Frosty
Hot Frosty has perhaps been Netflix’ surprise Christmas hit. Though I suspect by snapping up the Queen of Christmas Lacey Chabert they knew they had something on their hands. I suspect this is the racyest stuff Chabert has done in a while. Though lets be clear the racy stuff is the completely ridiculous physique of her co-lead Dustin Milligan.
When widow Cathy magically brings a snowman to life, his innocence helps heal her heart. Brockville and Ottawa both portray as the fictional setting of Hope Springs, New York.
So that is just some of the projects that recently completed filming in Ontario.
Meet Me Next Christmas
In pursuit of a fairytale romance, Layla (Christina Milian) must race through New York City with the help of a handsome and friendly ticket concierge (Devale Ellis) to get her hands on the hottest ticket in town: the sold out Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert.
Toronto fills in for NYC here and residents of the city might recognise The Opera House, Royal Alexandra Theatre (which even makes an appearance on the movie’s poster), Queen’s Park and The Comerade.
Meet Me Next Christmas, directed by Rusty Cundieff and co-starring Kofi Siriboe and Kalen Allen, premieres on Netflix, November 6.
Geek Girl
Emily Carey (House of the Dragon) stars in this Netflix teen series about a teen plucked from obscurity to become a fashion model. While it takes place in London, England, a couple of episodes take place in —and were actually filmed in — in our nation’s capital, Ottawa.
