Award-winning Documentary Feature Bulletproof: A Lesbian’s Guide to Surviving the Plot Launches on CBC Gem and documentary Channel for Pride Month

Bulletproof: A Lesbian’s Guide to Surviving the Plot, the witty and emotionally resonant documentary feature from filmmaker Regan Latimer, begins streaming on CBC Gem on June 13, 2025. Starting with a national broadcast premiere on documentary Channel on June 29, 2025 at 9 p.m. and midnight ET. Kicking off Pride Month with heart, humour, and powerful nostalgia. Bulletproof explores the high-stakes world of LGBTQ+ representation on television—how it’s shapes us, and why it still matters.
What do our TV stories teach us about who gets to be seen, to love, or to live happily ever after? Bulletproof dives into these questions with sharp insight, wit and deep love for the shows that shaped us. Weaving personal reflections with interviews from TV writers, producers, actors, advocates, and media psychologists, the film investigates how LGBTQ+ representation has evolved—and what that evolution continues to mean for culture, identity, and the stories we tell. The film examines pivotal moments in television history—like the backlash to Lexa’s death on The 100—that sparked public outcry and forced the industry to confront the emotional fallout of how queer characters are written, erased, or silenced.

Featuring creators and insiders from Queer As Folk, Wynonna Earp, Sort Of, Canada’s Drag Race, and more — including fan-favourite actor Kat Barrell — Bulletproof is a love letter to queer television: one that bridges communities, offering affirmation for those who’ve lived it and eye-opening perspective for those just beginning to understand what’s at stake.
Representation Isn’t about Visibility Alone
“I wanted to make the kind of film I needed to see growing up,” says director Regan Latimer. “One that holds our pain and our joy, our rage and our resilience—and reminds us that representation isn’t about visibility alone. It’s about survival, hope, and change.”
Winner of multiple Best Documentary awards, including from Image+Nation (Montreal), FilmOut San Diego, and Cinema Diverse (Palm Springs), Bulletproof also earned Latimer the prestigious Lindalee Tracey Award at Hot Docs 2025.
An all-female and non-binary core creative team came together to create Bulletproof. An intentional choice that shaped both the tone and the intimacy of the storytelling. Filming took place across Canada, the US and in the UK, the film was written, directed, edited and produced by Regan Latimer (B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye) and executive produced by Jill Golick (Ruby Skye P.I., Instant Star).
