The newly titled Guarding Stars, the romcom starring Leighton Meester and Jared Padalecki, resumes filming today in Alberta.

Guarding stars follows a movie star (Jared Padalecki) who is assigned a bodyguard (Leighton Meester) as he is being stalked. However, when the actor returns to his family’s home for the holidays, he has the bodyguard pretend to be his girlfriend so his family doesn’t worry.

The film is an adaptation of the novel The Bodyguard by Katherine Center. The setting moves from Texas to Montana. The novel came out in July 2022.
The author has written 12 books over the course of her career so far, two of those became Netflix films. The Lost Husband came out in 2020 and starred Leslie Bibb and Josh Duhamel. That film went to Number One in August of 2020 and made the top 25 Netflix films for that year.
In 2021 Netflix adapted Happiness For Beginners with Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes. It hit Netflix’s global Top 10 in 81 countries.

Joining Meester and Padalecki are Andie MacDowell, Walker Hayes, Noah LaLonde and Toby Sandeman.
Filming on the film takes place in Calgary. Initial filming began on 4 December 2025 and completed on 20 December 2025. After the holiday break filming resumes today 12 January 2026 and will run until 23 January 2026.
Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum is the director, Grant Scherzo, Richard Keith and Erin Cardillo are the writers. Genevieve Padalecki, Little Engine and Netflix produce the project.
