Love and Money
Love and Money, is a wholly improvised dramatic comedy made over twelve months for under $15,000. A daring experiment in authenticity and creative freedom. Shot in chronological order with a cast of Vancouver’s top improvisational actors, the film captures the raw humour and heartbreak of modern relationships with striking immediacy. It was filmed, scored and locked month by month with no re-edits and was completely improvised by the actors who received only one or two words of direction per scene or even who would be appearing in the scenes with them.
“This was easily the most joy I have ever experienced making a film. It returned me to that place where anything was possible. The voyage of discovery – as we really had no idea where it was going – was exhilarating, knowing we could really do anything we wanted,” says Ray. “The cast and crew were so daring. The actors carried so much weight, we literally made up the movie as we shot it. What emerged was as much about conscious intent as it was about diving into the subconscious and letting intuition and instinct take flight. When we started we didn’t know if it was a comedy, horror or musical.”
A Quest
Love and Money follows a washed up, reclusive musician who ventures forth to seek out a missing friend. Along the way, he meets estranged family members, an Interpol agent and a very silly ally who all help him unlock the mystery of his own exile in this strange and surprising film that could only have been created without any idea where it was going. Kind of like life.
