A state-of-the-art Volume LED stage is coming to John Hopkins Soundstage in Regina.
For those like myself who are unaware the stage allows for virtual sets without the use of green screens in film and TV production. They are a new addition to the world of film production with projects like Disney’s The Mandalorian and The Batman being some of the first to utilize the technology.
The Volume LED stage is made up of LED light-bars, monitors and connected computer tech, and uses CGI and real-time visual effects to virtually replicate any setting or atmosphere desired.
First Projects
The first project for the new stage will be King of Killers, a television series from Karma Studios. It is a spinoff from the film of the same name and based on the graphic novel from Kevin Grevioux.
The Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association (SMPIA) thinks this will prove a boon for the local entertainment industry.
SMPIA president Ken Alecxe said the addition of a virtual stage will be a major boost for film production. He believes that the stage could prove an “add-on for what our industry will be able to do.”
He went on to add:
“People are looking for virtual production and LED-wall capacity, and they’ll be looking here. Whether you want to do traditional filming, or innovative technology filming, this will be the place.”
Saskatchewan has invested $17 million into film production from the provincial government just this year. This seems to be part of a move to attract filmmakers to the region after an exodus a decade ago.
