A new adaption of the epic novel Shogun will premiere as a limited series in 2024 on FX.
Adapted from James Clavell’s bestselling 1975 novel, Shōgun is set in feudal Japan. It charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai:
John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), a woman with invaluable skills but dishonourable family ties who must prove her value and allegiance.
The show will premiere on FX and likely move on to a streaming service, Disney+ or Hulu. Here is a statement from FX CEO John Landgraf about production:
We wrapped physical production on the limited series Shōgun in June [2022), which was by far our biggest and most ambitious production ever. We still have a long process of post-production ahead of us but the show looks fantastic.
Production on the period piece began on 21 September 2021 and ended on 30 June 2022. The show will consist of 10 episodes. Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are join showrunners on the project. Producers include Justin Marks, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, Michael De Luca, Michaela Clavell and Tim Van Patten.
British Columbia locations used include Ucluelet on Vancouver Island and Rocky Point in Port Moody.
