Canadian comedian, writer and actor Mae Martin is currently in Ontario filming upcoming thriller Wayward for Netflix.
Abby and Leila (Sydney Topliffe and Alyvia Alyn Lind) are your typical sixteen-year-old pot heads. When their exasperated parents run out of patience with them, they are sent to Tall Pines, a rural correctional school run by an unregulated, murderous cult. Once there, they face an existential battle to retain their friendship, their sanity – and their lives.
At the same time, Detective Alex Dempsey (Mae Martin), struggling with a troubled past of their own, moves to Tall Pines at the bequest of their wife Laura (Sarah Gadon), who grew up there and wishes to return home to raise their soon to be born child.
But when Dempsey discovers the truth about Tall Pines, and their wife’s deeper connections to the evils the town protects, they must work with our two potheads turned heroes to take it down from the inside.
Casting News

Wayward is a thriller set in a scenic town with a sinister side. The limited series explores the insidious underbelly of the “troubled teen industry” and the eternal struggle between one generation and the next. It will consist of eight episodes.
Martin will be busy on this new project. They are not only starring but also the co-showrunner, executive producer and creator. Ryan Scott is co-showrunner and executive producer, alongside Martin. Euros Lyn, who helmed all episodes of Heartstopper Seasons 1 and 2, has joined Wayward as a director and executive producer.
This is what they had to say to Tudum:
“We are deep in the bizarre world of Wayward, and I am so excited to show everyone what we’ve been making — what a cast! I hope this show ignites the rebellious teenagers that exist in all of us. And, most importantly, let’s acknowledge that my hair is now several shades darker than previously, indicating that I am now in fact a serious actor.”
Filming runs from 2 July 2024 until 16 October 2024 in the Toronto area. Sphere Media and Objective Fiction are producers on the limited series.
